At What Age Do Dogs Use Potty Pads?

Normally, the following situations are suitable for dogs to use toilet pads:
Puppy Stage
Usually, dogs from birth to around 1 year old are more suitable for using puppy training pads.

  • During the period when puppies have not fully learned how to use the designated restroom: When puppies are a few months old, their body control ability is still developing and they cannot control the timing and location of excretion as well as adult dogs. For example, newly weaned puppies, who are about 1-2 months old, may not yet understand where to defecate and urinate. Using a puppy pad can provide them with a relatively fixed and suitable excretion area, making it easier for their owners to guide and train them.
  • Stage of incomplete vaccination: Puppies cannot go out for walks or defecate outdoors until they have completed all vaccinations (usually around 3-4 months of age). Because their immunity is weak at this time, they are prone to contracting various pathogens when going out. So it is necessary to place puppy pads indoors for them to excrete, which can meet their excretion needs and ensure their health.

Elderly Dog Stage
Generally, dogs aged 7 and above are also suitable for using pee pads.

  • Physical function decline: With age, the physical function of elderly dogs gradually declines, such as joint problems, slow movement, and less flexibility. As some large dogs age, they may suffer from diseases such as hip dysplasia, which makes it difficult for them to quickly go outdoors to defecate like they did when they were young. At this time, placing a potty pad indoors can facilitate their timely excretion and reduce physical discomfort caused by constipation due to mobility issues.
  • Cognitive ability changes: Some elderly dogs may experience cognitive dysfunction, similar to human Alzheimer's disease. They may forget their previous habits of going out to defecate or cannot find their way outdoors. Preparing potty pads for them can be a supplementary measure to prevent them from urinating indoors and outdoors.

Adult Dogs With Special Circumstances
Some adult dogs may also need to use toilet pads in special circumstances.

  • During illness or postoperative recovery period: If an adult dog is sick and physically weak, such as suffering from serious gastrointestinal or urinary system diseases, or has just undergone surgery and has limited mobility. They may not be able to defecate normally outside, and placing toilet pads indoors can help them solve their excretion problems more conveniently during their recovery period, which is beneficial for their recovery.
  • Unable to go out for a long time in bad weather: in case of rainstorm, snowstorm, extreme cold and other bad weather, and unable to take adult dogs out for a long time to walk and defecate, prepare the toilet pad in advance and put it in a suitable position indoors, or let dogs have a place to excrete, so as to avoid their health problems due to suffocation.

So dogs of different age stages, as long as they have the corresponding conditions mentioned above, can consider using toilet pads to meet their excretion needs and facilitate their owners' management.
