Changing hamster bedding too frequently can easily stress the hamster and disrupt its familiar scent environment. On the other hand, leaving bedding unchanged for too long allows urine and faeces to build up, fostering bacteria and unpleasant odours, which may trigger skin disorders and respiratory issues. There is no universal fixed replacement schedule. The frequency depends on bedding type, ambient temperature, number of hamsters and cage size.

Daily Spot Cleaning

Whether you use paper bedding, wood shavings or mixed bedding, daily partial cleaning is essential. Inspect the cage every day and promptly remove urine-clumped bedding, droppings and rotten food scraps. This is especially important in hot summer weather, as urine-soaked bedding can rapidly turn mouldy and smelly. Highly absorbent hamster paper bedding forms distinct urine clumps that are easy to pick out, effectively extending the service life of the bulk bedding.

Recommended Full Cage Bedding Replacement Intervals

For a single hamster kept in a sufficiently spacious cage with premium hamster paper bedding, the recommended replacement schedule is as follows: Carry out a full bedding change approximately every 7 days during cool spring and autumn. In hot and humid summer, fully replace the bedding every 4 to 5 days. Moisture and odours build up faster under high temperatures. Once paper bedding is saturated with urine, fungi tend to grow, so it cannot be used for an extended period. In cold and dry winter, the interval can be extended to a maximum of 7–10 days.

Hamster Bedding

When multiple hamsters live in the same cage with limited average activity space and high urine output: urine accumulates more rapidly and bedding gets saturated sooner. It is advised to shorten the replacement cycle. Fully replace bedding every 3–4 days in summer, and around every 5 days in spring and autumn.

If using wood shavings bedding: wood shavings have low water absorption capacity and retain moisture more easily than hamster paper bedding. The full replacement frequency should be shortened by an additional 1–2 days compared with paper bedding.

Special Circumstances Requiring Immediate Full Replacement

Carry out a complete bedding change right away if any of the following occur:

  • Strong, sharp odour in the cage that cannot be eliminated by spot cleaning alone
  • Large areas of damp, clumpy bedding or visible mould spots
  • The hamster has diarrhoea, contaminating extensive areas of bedding
  • Rotting fruit and vegetable leftovers inside the cage attracting small flying insects

Tips for Bedding Replacement

  • Replace bedding when the hamster is awake and calm; avoid disturbing its daytime sleep repeatedly.
  • Spread out new bedding in advance to air it out and reduce dust. Opt for low-dust hamster paper bedding to minimise respiratory irritation.
  • Avoid overusing strongly scented disinfectants. Excessive sanitisation removes the hamster's familiar scents and may cause stress.
