Hamsters are highly sensitive to heat. Their ideal living temperature ranges from 20°C to 26°C. Once the temperature exceeds 30°C, they become prone to heatstroke and loss of appetite; prolonged exposure to 40°C can be life-threatening. Below are the key precautions for keeping hamsters in summer:

Temperature Control Is the Top Priority

Hamsters have no sweat glands, making high temperatures extremely dangerous for them.

  • Ideal temperature: Maintain the housing environment between 20°C and 26°C, and avoid exceeding 28°C whenever possible.
  • Avoid direct sunlight: The cage should never be placed near a window or on a balcony, as direct sunlight can cause the internal temperature to spike within a short time.
  • Use cooling equipment properly: Use a fan or air conditioner to cool down the environment.
  • Provide cooling accessories: Ceramic hides and marble cooling plates are also excellent options.

Maintain Proper Ventilation

Summer brings high humidity. Without adequate ventilation, the cage can easily become a breeding ground for bacteria and odors.

  • Choose a cage with good air permeability; wire cages are more suitable for summer than acrylic cages.
  • Open windows regularly for fresh air circulation.
  • Do not place the cage in corners, under cabinets, or in any location with stagnant air.

Manage Diet and Water Intake Carefully

Under high temperatures, a hamster's appetite decreases and water loss accelerates, requiring more attentive dietary management.

  • Provide ample, fresh water: Replace drinking water daily, as hamsters' water intake increases noticeably in summer.
  • Feed fruits and vegetables in moderation: Offer appropriate amounts daily and promptly remove any leftovers to prevent spoilage in the heat.
  • Feed staple food in small, frequent portions: Staple food is more prone to moisture absorption and deterioration in summer, so feed smaller amounts more frequently.
  • Avoid high-fat and high-sugar foods: Reduce snacks such as sunflower seeds, peanuts, and mealworms in summer to prevent internal heat and obesity.

Paper Bedding

Choose Summer-Appropriate Hamster Bedding

Compared with wood shavings, hamster paper bedding offers distinct advantages in summer:

  • Superior absorbency: High-quality paper bedding can absorb up to three times more liquid than ordinary wood shavings, quickly soaking up urine to keep the cage dry and reduce dampness and bacterial growth.
  • Excellent breathability: Paper bedding has a fluffy texture that allows air to circulate through the fibers, providing better ventilation than wood shavings.
  • Ultra-low dust: Low-dust paper bedding effectively reduces respiratory irritation.
  • Optimal firmness: Paper bedding strikes the right balance of softness and support, allowing hamsters to burrow and build nests comfortably.

Increase Cleaning Frequency

Higher summer temperatures accelerate the decomposition of waste, making odors and bacteria more likely to develop.

  • Spot cleaning: Inspect the cage daily and promptly remove soiled bedding and leftover food.
  • Full cleaning: In summer, it is recommended to thoroughly clean the cage once a week. Wipe the cage with warm water and allow it to dry completely before adding fresh bedding.
  • Accessory disinfection: Clean food bowls, water bottles, and exercise wheels once a week to prevent residue from spoiling.
